Scope
The Ministry of Justice can at any stage consult the council when drafting animal welfare legislation or when general issues relating to animal welfare arise. Furthermore, the council has the authority to make statements on its own initiative regarding animal welfare.
Structure
The Animal Welfare Council consists of three members; a leading scientist (presiding) and two representatives, who are appointed one each by an animal welfare organisation and by a farmer association.The rules of procedure are laid down in the Ministry of Justice executive order No 971 of 7th December 1992 concerning the rules of procedure for The special council concerning animal welfare matters (The Animal Welfare Council).
